The Short Version
For sites the grid never properly reached.
Off-grid is not a downgrade from grid-tie, it is a different problem: the inverter is the only source of stable AC on site, so waveform quality, charge priority and battery handling matter more than peak conversion efficiency.
Pure sine wave
Motors, pumps and switch-mode supplies run cool. Modified sine costs you equipment life.
MPPT or PWM
MPPT tracks at better than 99.7% for maximum harvest; PWM keeps the capital cost down where the array is small.
Charges from 90 V AC
Keeps charging on a supply too weak for most inverters to use at all.
Configurable priority
Solar first, or solar then grid, or solar only — set per site from the keypad rather than assumed.
Selectable battery type
Tubular, flat plate, VRLA or lithium, with the charge profile set to match.
Intelligent charge sharing
Solar and grid charging currents are shared rather than fought over.
Applications
Where this range is specified
Farms and dairy
Sheds and equipment beyond the LT line.
Field installations
Remote pumping and monitoring loads.
Remote facilities
Sites where extending the grid costs more than the system.
Rural homes
Where supply exists only on paper.

Off-grid or hybrid?
If there is a usable grid connection, hybrid. If there is no connection, or it is unusable, off-grid — and note these PCUs will charge from a supply as low as 90 V AC, which is often the real situation rather than no supply at all.
PWM or MPPT?
MPPT tracks the array at better than 99.7% and is worth it on larger arrays and cold mornings. PWM is cheaper and adequate on small 12 V and 24 V systems.
What battery does it need?
Tubular is the default profile, but flat-plate, VRLA and lithium are all selectable from the keypad so the charge voltages match what you actually fitted.
Can I stop it using the grid at all?
Yes. In Solar Only mode the unit never transfers to mains for bypass or charging, and runs on solar and battery alone.
